Manickavasagar
மாணிக்கவாசகர்
Saint Manickavasagar was one of the most beloved saints of the Tamil Saiva tradition and a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Born in the 9th century, he served as a minister in the Pandya kingdom before renouncing worldly life after experiencing the divine grace of Lord Shiva at Thiruperundurai.
Known for his deep devotion and spiritual wisdom, Manickavasagar dedicated his life to spreading the message of love, surrender, and union with the Divine. His hymns continue to touch the hearts of devotees with their emotional depth and profound spirituality.
Contribution to Thiruvasagam
Manickavasagar’s devotion found expression in the sacred collection of hymns known as Thiruvasagam (திருவாசகம்), one of the most treasured works of Tamil devotional literature. Filled with love, humility, longing, and complete surrender to Lord Shiva, these verses beautifully express the soul’s yearning for divine grace.
Together with Thirukkovaiyar, his compositions form an important part of the Saiva canon and are recited in temples and homes across generations.
